Dear GMES Families,
Thanks to you all for volunteering and supporting our STEAM event! The activities were fun and engaging and the pizza was great!
We love getting feedback from you and your students! The idea of STEAM Night and pick up process after school was changed because of your ideas during our Boosters and Bytes monthly meeting. Students asked to be able to play volleyball on the playground and it's one of our most popular activities at recess. We also share pre-packaged and fresh food at breakfast and lunch because students said they were still hungry after eating. Finally, our Student Leadership Team recently presented a proposal to our staff about wearing hats and our staff approved it.
Another opportunity to provide feedback will be at Conferences with teachers that begin on Tuesday, March 31st. Please plan on time to complete a survey and register to vote on April 28th. Our community will be voting on a Levy for a new Water System for our district that needs to be replaced. Sincerely, Dan Aragon |

Future Chef Competitors... |

|
The Future Chef Competition was a big hit with our 3rd–5th grade students! 🍳👩🍳👨🍳 Six talented contestants showcased their cooking skills and shared some delicious recipes. After tasting and judging the dishes, our winners were: 🥇 1st Place: McKinley Heggie with her Grandma’s Polish Spaghetti 🥈 2nd Place: Freddie Hays with his Street Tacos 🥉 3rd Place: Madison Graves with her Chicken Quesadilla and Pico de Gallo
Great job to all of our contestants for their creativity, hard work, and tasty dishes! We are so proud of these young chefs and can’t wait to see what they cook up next. 👏🍴 |

I have tried to keep these Counselor Corners upbeat and cheerful. I must admit this topic has never been one that I considered myself especially good at. I have watched my children do much better with their kids than their Dad and I did with them. That topic is Chores. All the research points to kids having responsibilities at home, a very good idea. The research is long established and I knew it when I was raising my kids. Sometimes it just seemed easier to do things myself or I just didn’t want to have any conversation about how, when and who would do what.
My kids now are parents and they have come up with some great ideas. First, my daughter in law calls them family contributions. These tasks are how you help your family. You take care of yourself for some things and you take care of others because you care about your family members.
Next, they turn on happy music and when the music is on no one can complain. It is pretty funny to watch them all take the garbage out with silly grins on their face and dance around while they put away laundry.
Then, they make sure kids are doing age appropriate tasks and understand what the expectation is. My four year old granddaughter has to make sure all the shoes are matched and placed on the shoe rack. It took her a few times to understand that the shoes needed to be placed together but she got it. Lastly, they offer choices. Would you rather fold towels and put them away or put the dishes in the dishwasher. Don’t forget to praise when kids help out around the house and be specific. “You set the table so we could all enjoy a meal together, thanks, that helps so much.
One thing I noticed when my attitude was bad about house chores was my kids would have a bad attitude too. The more I complained about the pile of dishes in the sink, the less anyone besides me was going to jump in and do the dishes. It wasn’t until my youngest son said, “ I would do it Mom but you make it seem so awful why would I want to?” That straightened me up right away, I wanted my family to know I cared for them and I loved taking care of them but we all need to help out to make it easier for the entire family.

Parents that will be doing parent drop-off/pick-up that have children at both RPS and GMES will drop-off/pick-up their RPS student first, then continue onto the GMES pick up area.
Please be patient in the drop-off/pick-up area, sometimes it goes slow. Zippering in line and being kind makes things go so much quicker.
